Hair care is personal for me. Growing up, I didn’t really know how to care for my own hair. There were times when I wished I had anyone’s hair except mine because I didn’t understand what my hair needed or which products actually worked for it. I didn’t truly learn how to care for my natural hair until I was in my 30s.

For me, caring for my kids’ hair isn’t just about making sure it looks good. I want their hair to be healthy, but I also want them to grow up understanding their hair and feeling confident about it.

Pay attention to a few things: Does their hair dry out quickly? Does it tangle easily? Is their scalp sensitive? Are you trying to define curls, maintain a protective style, or simply keep their hair moisturized between wash days? Those answers can help you decide which products are actually worth trying.
For most routines, you can start simple with a gentle cleanser, conditioner, detangler or leave-in conditioner, and a styling or moisturizing product as needed. Then pay attention to how your child’s hair responds.
And don’t feel like every product has to come from the same brand. One brand might make the conditioner you love while another makes the detangler that gets you through wash day without everybody being mad. Use what works for your child’s hair.
