A few years ago I disconnected from everyone. I was at a place in life where I wasn’t really happy and I knew something had to change. What I needed was a reset. I knew everyone wouldn’t get it but I had to finally start thinking about myself and prioritizing mental health was something I had to do for my own healing. And, unlike anything else I’d ever done, emotional healing would require work.
What are some ways to prioritize mental health?
Set up boundaries: I had to realize that everyone doesn’t deserve access to me. We often hear people say they’ve reached their limit. However, I don’t want to get to that point. I had to figure out what I would and wouldn’t tolerate. I wouldn’t allow anyone to take advantage of me.
Focus on me: I spend a lot of time making sure that everyone around me is okay. Oftentimes putting my own wants and needs on the back burner. Being too available to people caused me to spread myself too thin. Every day I started loving myself a little bit more. I am so serious about self-care it allows me to recognize how important my feelings are.
Therapy: Woooo! This was heavy. Putting myself in a position where I was vulnerable really made me see all of the things I needed to change within myself. Sometimes we don’t want to admit that maybe, just maybe we could be the toxic ones. It gave me the opportunity to dig deep and reflect. I checked out Therapy for Black Girls a platform that was developed to present mental health topics in a way that feels more accessible and relevant.
Taking breaks and investing in your healing
In order to truly heal I had to be honest, open, and vulnerable. So many of us were taught to be strong and to muster through anything we’re going through. We keep it all inside until it manifests into pain and illness. My blog has allowed me the opportunity to open up about my own mental health. I’ve opened up about our journey with finding out that our son has autism spectrum disorder. Being authentic has allowed me to finally heal!
