Sometimes the best date night is putting on your pajamas, grabbing some snacks, getting comfortable on the couch, and finding a good movie to watch together.
But if you’re anything like me, figuring out what to watch on date night can take longer than actually watching the movie.
So I put together some of my favorite date night movies featuring Black love, from romantic comedies and classics to dramas and even a little action. Because every date-night movie doesn’t have to be a traditional love story.
And we’re not just picking movies over here. I’ve paired each one with a snack and drink idea so you can turn your movie night into an actual at-home date.
Whether you’re looking for Black romance movies, a classic love story, something funny, or simply a good movie to watch with your partner, there’s something on this list for you.

What Makes a Good Date Night Movie?
A good date night movie is really whatever you and your partner will enjoy watching together. It doesn’t have to be a romantic comedy, or even a romance at all.
Sometimes you want something sweet and romantic. Other nights you want to laugh, watch a little drama, or put on something with enough action to keep both of you interested.
For me, the best movies for date night are the ones that give us something to enjoy together. And if the movie sparks a conversation afterward? Even better.
This list has a little bit of everything, but Black love is at the center. You’ll find romantic comedies, dramas, classics, music, sports, and even martial arts. And because snacks are absolutely part of movie night in my house, I’ve included a food and drink pairing for every movie too.
16 Best Date Night Movies Featuring Black Love
1. You, Me & Tuscany (2026)
Directed by: Kat Coiro
Starring: Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page
If you want something newer for date night, You, Me & Tuscany deserves a spot on the list. Halle Bailey plays Anna, an aspiring chef whose impulsive trip to Tuscany gets complicated when she pretends to be engaged to the owner of the villa where she’s staying. Then Michael, played by Regé-Jean Page, enters the picture, and you already know where this is going.
You’ve got Tuscany, beautiful scenery, food, a little mess, and a Black leading couple at the center of the romance. It’s an easy choice when you want a newer romantic comedy for an at-home date night.
Snack: Put together an Italian-inspired board with prosciutto, cheeses, olives, crackers, grapes, and a little something sweet.
Drink: Sparkling water with lemon or an Italian-inspired mocktail. If you’re making cocktails, choose your favorite Italian-style aperitif.
2. The Photograph (2020)
Directed by: Stella Meghie
Starring: Issa Rae and LaKeith Stanfield
If you want a date night movie that’s romantic without being overly cheesy, The Photograph is such a good choice. The story follows Mae, who begins uncovering her late mother’s past through a photograph and a series of letters. Along the way, she meets Michael, a journalist working on a story connected to her mother, and their own romance begins to unfold.
It’s beautifully shot, grown, romantic, and gives you plenty to talk about afterward—especially when it comes to love, family, and how the relationships we grow up around can shape our own.
Snack: Keep this simple and a little grown: a charcuterie board with cheeses, meats, fruit, nuts, and chocolate.
Drink: Sparkling lemonade or your favorite date-night cocktail.
3. Sylvie’s Love (2020)
Directed by: Eugene Ashe
Starring: Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha
If you’re in the mood for an old-school love story, Sylvie’s Love is a beautiful choice for date night. Set in the 1950s and 1960s, the movie follows Sylvie, who meets aspiring saxophonist Robert while he’s working at her father’s record store. Their connection is undeniable, but life, relationships, and their individual dreams continue to pull them in different directions.
I love that this one feels like a classic Hollywood romance while putting Black love front and center. Between the fashion, jazz, gorgeous cinematography, and slow-burn romance, it’s perfect when you want your date night to feel a little more sophisticated.
Snack: Macarons, chocolate-covered strawberries, or a small dessert board.
Drink: Lavender lemonade or a French 75.
4. Love & Basketball (2000)
Directed by: Gina Prince-Bythewood Starring: Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps
Listen, you can’t have a list of Black love movies without including Love & Basketball! This is one of those classics that never gets old. The story follows Monica and Quincy, two childhood friends who share a love for basketball and dreams of playing professionally. As they grow up, their friendship turns into something more, but love, ambition, and a little pride complicate their relationship.
What makes this such a good date night movie is that it isn’t just about falling in love. It’s about growing together, chasing your dreams, and figuring out how to support each other without losing yourself in the process. Plus, if you and your partner love sports, this one gives you the best of both worlds.
Snack: Loaded nachos with cheese, jalapeños, guacamole, and your favorite toppings.
Drink: Classic lemonade or a lemon-lime soda.
5. Brown Sugar (2002)
Directed by: Rick Famuyiwa
Starring: Taye Diggs and Sanaa Lathan
If friends-to-lovers is your thing, Brown Sugar needs to be on your date night list. Dre and Sidney have been best friends since childhood, bonded by their love of hip-hop. As adults, they’re building their careers and navigating relationships while slowly realizing that the person they’ve been looking for might have been right there all along.
This is one of my favorites because it gives us Black love, friendship, music, and nostalgia all in one movie. And that soundtrack? Listen. If you grew up loving hip-hop and early-2000s Black movies, this is such a fun one to revisit with your partner.
Snack: Sweet potato fries with spicy aioli.
Drink: Ginger beer or your favorite craft beer.
6. Love Jones (1997)
Directed by: Theodore Witcher
Starring: Larenz Tate and Nia Long
Love Jones is one of those Black love stories that just feels grown. Darius is a poet, Nina is a photographer, and their relationship begins with chemistry but quickly becomes complicated by timing, feelings, and the question of what they actually mean to each other.
Between the poetry, jazz, Chicago backdrop, and undeniable chemistry between Darius and Nina, this is perfect when you want a date night movie that’s romantic but still feels real. It’s messy, passionate, and a reminder that sometimes the hardest part of love is simply figuring out what you want, and saying it.
Snack: Chocolate-covered strawberries and truffles.
Drink: Champagne or sparkling cider.
7. Jason’s Lyric (1994)
Directed by: Doug McHenry
Starring: Allen Payne and Jada Pinkett Smith
If you want your date night movie with a little more drama, Jason’s Lyric is the one. Jason and Lyric fall in love while Jason is carrying the weight of childhood trauma and trying to protect his family. Their relationship becomes part of his struggle to imagine a different life for himself.
This one is definitely heavier than some of the romantic comedies on this list, but that’s also what makes it a good choice when you want something with more depth. It’s about Black love, family, healing, and what happens when you’re trying to move forward while your past keeps pulling you back.
Snack: BBQ ribs with a side of coleslaw.
Drink: Sweet tea or an Old Fashioned.
8. The Perfect Find (2023)
Directed by: Numa Perrier
Starring: Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers
If you love a romance with a little mess involved, The Perfect Find is a fun date night pick. Gabrielle Union plays Jenna, a fashion editor trying to rebuild her career after a very public breakup. Things get complicated when she falls for Eric, her younger coworker, who also happens to be her boss’s son. Whew.
I like this one for date night because it gives us a Black woman in her 40s navigating love, career, starting over, and an age-gap relationship without acting like romance has an expiration date. It’s sexy, stylish, and light enough for a night when you just want to relax and enjoy something together.
Snack: Sushi rolls or your favorite takeout sushi.
Drink: Sake, green tea, or a sparkling mocktail.
9. Just Wright (2010)
Directed by: Sanaa Hamri
Starring: Queen Latifah, Common, and Paula Patton
Just Wright is for anybody who loves a good friends-to-lovers story with some basketball mixed in. Queen Latifah plays Leslie Wright, a physical therapist and huge basketball fan who gets hired to help NBA star Scott McKnight recover from an injury. The more time they spend together, the closer they become, but of course, there’s a little relationship drama standing in the way.
What I love about this one is that Leslie doesn’t have to completely change who she is to be worthy of love. The movie puts friendship, genuine connection, and being appreciated for who you are at the center of the romance. Plus, Queen Latifah and Common together just make this an easy, feel-good date night watch.
Snack: Gourmet popcorn—try truffle, parmesan, or your favorite seasoning.
Drink: Sparkling wine or a mojito.

10. Poetic Justice (1993)
Directed by: John Singleton
Starring: Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur
If you’re in the mood for a ’90s Black love story, Poetic Justice is a must. Justice is a young poet grieving the loss of her boyfriend when a road trip from Los Angeles to Oakland puts her in close quarters with Lucky. What starts with plenty of tension slowly develops into something deeper.
This isn’t your typical light and fluffy romance. It’s about grief, healing, vulnerability, and allowing yourself to love again. And between Janet, Tupac, the poetry, the fashion, and that ’90s nostalgia, there’s so much to love about this movie.
Snack: Tacos with your favorite fillings.
Drink: Lavender lemonade, spiked or alcohol-free.
11. Resort to Love (2021)
Directed by: Steven K. Tsuchida
Starring: Christina Milian, Jay Pharoah, and Sinqua Walls
If you want something light, funny, and easy to watch for date night, Resort to Love is a good pick. Christina Milian plays Erica, an aspiring singer who takes a job performing at a beautiful island resort, only to discover that she’ll be singing at her ex-fiancé’s wedding. Because apparently a regular breakup wasn’t enough drama.
Between the gorgeous tropical setting, romantic complications, and Erica figuring out what she actually wants for herself, this is one of those movies you can put on when you want romance without anything too heavy.
Snack: Tropical fruit platter or coconut shrimp.
Drink: Piña colada, tropical smoothie, or pineapple mocktail.
12. Malcolm & Marie (2021)
Directed by: Sam Levinson
Starring: Zendaya and John David Washington
Now, if you want a date night movie that’s going to give you something to talk about afterward, Malcolm & Marie is definitely that movie. The entire story unfolds over one night as filmmaker Malcolm and his girlfriend, Marie, return home from his movie premiere and what should have been a celebratory evening turns into a very intense conversation about their relationship.
This is not the cute, cozy romance on the list. It’s raw, complicated, and sometimes uncomfortable as the couple digs into resentment, appreciation, love, and the ways partners can hurt each other. If you and your partner like movies that spark a real conversation afterward, this could be an interesting date night pick.
Snack: Bruschetta, stuffed mushrooms, or your favorite small bites.
Drink: Red wine, a classic martini, or sparkling water.
13. Boomerang (1992)
Directed by: Reginald Hudlin
Starring: Eddie Murphy, Robin Givens, and Halle Berry
If you want a date night movie that’s funny, sexy, and full of ’90s nostalgia, Boomerang is an easy pick. Eddie Murphy plays Marcus Graham, a successful advertising executive who’s used to being the one in control when it comes to dating—until he meets Jacqueline, a woman who basically gives him a taste of his own medicine.
Of course, there’s more to the story than Marcus getting humbled. As his relationships unfold, he starts figuring out the difference between attraction and actually building a meaningful connection. Between the comedy, romance, fashion, and incredible cast, this is a fun Black romantic comedy for an at-home date night.
Snack: Gourmet sliders with your favorite toppings.
Drink: Cosmopolitan or sparkling water with lime.
14. The Last Dragon (1985)
Directed by: Michael Schultz
Starring: Taimak and Vanity
Okay, The Last Dragon is for the date night when you want something completely different. Leroy Green is a martial artist on a mission to reach the highest level of martial arts mastery—“The Glow”—while dealing with the unforgettable Sho’nuff, the self-proclaimed Shogun of Harlem. Somewhere in all that chaos, there’s also a love story with singer Laura Charles.
This movie has martial arts, romance, comedy, music, and peak ’80s energy all rolled into one. Is it cheesy? Absolutely. But it’s cheesy in the best possible way! If one of you wants romance and the other wants action, this might be the compromise.
Snack: Kung Pao chicken wings and mini egg rolls.
Drink: Pineapple mocktail or a tropical rum cocktail.
15. A Jazzman’s Blues (2022)
Directed by: Tyler Perry
Starring: Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer
If you want a date night movie that’s more emotional than lighthearted, A Jazzman’s Blues brings the drama. Set in the 1940s, the story follows Bayou, a talented musician, and Leanne, whose love for each other is complicated by racism, family secrets, and the realities of the time.
This definitely isn’t the movie to choose when you’re looking for a cute rom-com. It’s a tragic Black love story filled with music, history, family, and some seriously complicated choices. But if you and your partner enjoy movies that leave you talking about what happened long after the credits roll, this is one to watch.
Snack: Southern-style cornbread with honey butter.
Drink: Sweet tea or a mint julep.
16. Beyond the Lights (2014)
Directed by: Gina Prince-Bythewood
Starring: Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nate Parker
If you like your romance with a little music and drama, Beyond the Lights is such a good date night pick. Noni is a rising music star struggling under the pressure of fame when Kaz, a police officer, enters her life during one of her lowest moments. As their relationship develops, they both have to figure out what they really want for themselves—not just what everyone else expects from them.
What I love about this movie is that the romance isn’t the only story. It’s also about identity, mental health, ambition, and learning to choose yourself. Noni and Kaz’s relationship gives both of them room to question the lives they’ve been building, which makes this one deeper than your typical love story.
Snack: Mini sliders with your favorite fillings.
Drink: Mojito or virgin mojito.

You don’t have to leave the house or plan something elaborate to have a good date night. Sometimes it’s as simple as choosing a movie, grabbing your favorite snacks, putting the phones away, and spending a few uninterrupted hours together.
Whether you choose a classic like Love Jones, something fun like Boomerang, or a newer romance like You, Me & Tuscany, I hope this list helps you spend a little less time scrolling and a lot more time actually enjoying your date.
And don’t forget the snacks—because in my house, that’s half the date night experience anyway.
