The Wigwam offers many fun activities for kids, including swimming pools, water slides, yard games, bocce ball, tennis courts, bike rentals, and much more!
Where is the Wigwam Resort located?
Before we had kids my hubby and I were always on vacation. I guess it helped that since we worked for the airlines we were always merely a few clicks away from being on a beach with drinks. Now that we have kids the logistics are a little bit different. With everything going on right now we really haven’t taken any flights, but we still wanted to be able to relax a bit as a family. Staycations have really become a part of our lives now. We recently had the opportunity to stay at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park. Not only did it give us the family experience we were looking for but we were able to patronize one of our local businesses.
Welcome to the Wigwam Resort!
When we arrived we were greeted by one of the nicest valet/bell people. He gave us a quick history of the hotel and then let us park right in front. The first thing I noticed is that it reminded me of my overnights (from my flight attendant days) in the Caribbean. Even though it was spread out that’s really what gave me the “resort” vibe.
How old is the Wigwam Resort?
Built in 1908, the resort is a historic property that has managed to stay true to its authenticity while still offering many room options. We checked into an Adobe Casita Suite, which had log beam ceilings, a stone fireplace, a living area with a sofa sleeper, a wet bar, and Jacuzzi tubs. We essentially had our own little duplex, because it came equipped with its own little porch area and front and back doors. It was also conveniently located near the pool! Walking around this open resort gave off a feeling like we were in a quiet little community. I’m going to post a lot of pics because I want you to visualize what I’m talking about. LOL.
Wigwam Resort or Tranquil Suburb?
After we checked in we did what most people do and we went to explore the lay of the land. My son is just like his father, meaning he’s never met a stranger, and everyone we passed treated us like they already knew us. It was honestly like I was in a tv show where all of the neighbors know each other. They were making use of their porches and just hanging out. Added bonus: parking is free and on most of the property you can park right in front of your unit!
Take advantage of their kid-friendly activities
One of the main things that attracted us to the Wigwam resort is that they are family-friendly. In the past, we have gone to hotels and there wasn’t really anything family-friendly about it. So we were excited when they actually had events, especially for the kiddos! Not only that but there were a ton of other families with kids. We didn’t feel like we were inconveniencing anyone and our boys made friends with some of the other kids. Here are just a few of the events they had planned:
- Family Games at Wigwam Bar
- Character Breakfast at Red’s Bar & Grill
- Superhero Training Camp
- Poolside Movie at Tower Pool
- Wildlife World Zoo in Sun Lounge
The boys got a chance to meet Elsa and Capt. America at Red’s Bar and Grill. They took pictures and also made balloon animals.
Another one of the activities was a superhero training camp with Spiderman. He set up an obstacle course that all of the kids were able to participate in. He even gave them a crime-fighting training lesson which ended with balloon twisting.
The Part Everyone Comes For….. the Pool
Well let me be real, this is the part the kids come for! First things first, they have two pools and one of them has a water slide! Even though our kiddos weren’t tall enough to get on, all of the older kids had a blast. Our boys actually forgot about the water slide because they were so busy with the splash pad. So if you have kids of different ages there is something for everyone. We also had a cabana! And I’m going to tell you right now once you have had a cabana you won’t want to experience the pool any other way. Just think about it your own little private shaded area where you can relax and enjoy your food and drinks when you aren’t in the pool. And yes the libations and food were in full effect!!
Favorite pool drink: STRAWBERRY LEMONADE
Smirnoff vodka | coconut rum | sweet ‘n sour
lemonade | island oasis strawberry
Favorite pool eats: BUFFALO CHICKEN WRAP
golden fried chicken strips | shredded lettuce
tomatoes | blue cheese crumbles | buffalo sauce
choice of flour or whole wheat tortilla
The Food….. the part we really came for!!
There were a few different dining options.
- Litchfield’s
- Red’s Bar and Grill
- Wigwam Bar
- Tower Pool Bar and Grill
- Doorstep Delivery (basically room service)
We had breakfast (and lunch) every day at Red’s because they have a breakfast buffet complete with an omelet station and that’s honestly what we live for. If you follow me at all on social media you already know we love to eat. The kids love the pool and we love the food and drinks. Most of the places we go to we always have to go off-site to get meals but we actually ate at the Wigwam resort the entire time.
Favorite appetizer: PRETZEL BITES
bacon cheddar dip | spicy honey mustard
Favorite burger: THE BIG PIG
pork patty | pulled pork | bacon | pickled jalapeño | cheddar | house bbq sauce
Last but not least, we had dinner at Litchfield’s. Named after Paul W. Litchfield, then Goodyear Tire & Rubber Executive and founder of Litchfield Park. Litchfield’s brings the farm-to-table philosophy in its dining experiences and supports the local community with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. And it did not disappoint! The kitchen where most of the meals are prepared sits in the open so you can actually watch them make your food. But with the awesome weather in Arizona, you might opt to enjoy your meal on the veranda or the patio. I’m going to share what we had and of course, these are my suggestions:
Appetizer: BRUSCHETTA
ricotta | apricot mostarda | pistachio | baguette
Mains: HARRISON FARMS CHICKEN
brown rice | oyster mushroom | zucchini | mushroom balsamic
CEDAR RIVER PRIME FILET
gouda mac | green bean | slab bacon | soy caramel
Zingle….. something worth mentioning!
Something that stood out to us was how accessible the Zingle text system made everything. What do I mean? When we checked in we received a welcome text from the Zingle text message communication system that they use. However, during our stay, we found out that if we ever needed to communicate with the hotel staff we could simply utilize the text system! For example, If we needed a golf cart for a ride, we could just send a text! You want doorstep delivery, just send a text! Ready to check out, just send a text! Notice a theme here? It was so easy and convenient to use.
So how does the Wigwam Resort rate?
Overall this was one of the best staycations we have taken. The food was delicious, the people were more than friendly, and there was actually stuff for us to enjoy as a family. If you are looking for a place to stay for a family staycation or just because you need accommodations for a visit then I would definitely recommend the Wigwam Resort.
Where are some of your favorite staycation spots? We are always looking for new places to visit!
