What is a cake pop?
A cake pop is a type of dessert that consists of a small ball of cake that is mounted on a lollipop stick and coated with a layer of frosting or candy coating.
What ingredients do you need for cake pops?
cake pop sticks, cake mix (I used a yellow mix but the chocolate cake tastes great too!), chocolate melting wafers, Sprinkles, vanilla frosting
What is the trick to dipping cake pops?
Trying to dip cake pops can be tricky, but here are some tips to help make the process smoother:
- Chill the cake balls: Make sure the batch of cake balls are well chilled before dipping. This will help the coating set quickly and prevent the cake balls from falling off the stick.
- Use the right chocolate: Use high-quality chocolate or candy melts for dipping. They melt easily and provide a smooth coating.
- Melt the chocolate carefully: Melt the chocolate or candy melts in a microwave or double boiler, stirring frequently. Be careful not to overheat the chocolate, as this can cause it to seize up and become unusable.
- Dip slowly: Dip the cake pop slowly into the melted chocolate, making sure to coat the entire cake ball. You can also use a spoon to pour the chocolate over the cake ball a little bit at a time.
- Tap off the excess: Tap the cake pop gently against the side of the bowl to remove any excess chocolate.
- Decorate quickly: Add any decorations or sprinkles to the cake pop before the chocolate sets.
- Let them set: Once you’ve finished dipping and decorating the cake pops, place them on a stand or on a sheet of wax paper to set. Don’t refrigerate the cake pops, as this can cause the coating to crack.
What not to do when making cake pops?
Try not to make the cake pops too big. I used a small cookie scoop that was about 1-1 1/2″ in diameter. Making the cake pops too big weighs down the stick. It can also be hard to dip the cake pop in the chocolate. resulting in it falling off the stick.
What can I use instead of candy melts for cake pops?
Candy melts are a type of confectionery coating used for dipping and decorating desserts such as cake pops, cookies, and candies. It’s important to note that candy melts are not the same as real chocolate, and they may contain vegetable fats and other ingredients that aren’t present in real chocolate. Here are some substitutes for candy melts:
Icing/frosting: microwave it for a few seconds to make it easier to stir.
Almond bark: is a type of confectionery coating made from vegetable oil, sugar, and flavorings. It’s called “almond” bark because it was originally made with almond oil, but most varieties today do not contain any almonds.
Almond bark is typically used for dipping and coating candies and other desserts, such as cake pops, pretzels, and fruit. It’s available in both white and dark chocolate varieties, and it’s known for its smooth texture and easy melting properties.
Compound chocolate: One advantage of compound chocolate is that it has a longer shelf life than real chocolate because it doesn’t contain cocoa butter, which can go rancid over time.
What is the best chocolate for cake pops?
The best chocolate for cake pops is one that melts easily and has a smooth, creamy texture once it has hardened. Chocolate that is specially formulated for candy making, such as candy melts or coating chocolate, is a good choice. Some good ideas are milk chocolate, dark chocolate or white chocolate depending on your personal preference or the flavor of your cake pops. Some popular brands of chocolate for cake pops include Ghirardelli, Wilton, and Merckens. Ultimately, the best chocolate for your cake pops will depend on your personal preference and the specific recipe you are using.
How long do cake pops last when made?
Keep in mind that you should store your cake pops in an airtight container in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve them. This will help keep them fresh and prevent them from drying out. In the fridge, they will last 2 weeks. When you are ready to serve them, you can allow them to come to room temperature for a few minutes before serving.

Mother's Day Cake Pops
Make this Mother's Day extra special with these adorable and delicious cake pops. These easy cake pops are a perfect treat for any occasion!
Ingredients
- 24 cake pop sticks
- 15 oz box yellow cake mix
- 7 oz Wilton candy melts
- 10 oz package of milk chocolate melting wafers
- Sprinkles
- 14 oz jar vanilla frosting
Instructions
- Make yellow cake per instructions on the box and let it cool completely.
- In a large bowl, crumble the prepared cake into fine crumbs. I used my fingers, but if you have a processor that might be easier.
- Add 6 oz spoonfuls of vanilla frosting to the cake. Combine with your hands or a spoon. Gradually add more frosting until the cake holds together if squeezed. You don't want it too crumbly or it won't hold together.
- Using a medium cookie scoop, scoop out 1 scoop of cake mixture. Roll it into a ball and place it onto a plate or parchment paper. Repeat until all the cake mixture has been formed into balls.
- Refrigerate the balls until firm, about 30 minutes.
- About 5 minutes before you take the balls out of the fridge melt your chocolate according to package instructions.
- Take the cake pops out of the fridge. Dip a half inch of the lollipop stick into the melted chocolate and then stick it halfway into a cake ball.
- Dip each cake pop into the melted chocolate and let any excess runoff. Dip the cake pop into the sprinkles or turn the cake pop upright and sprinkle with sprinkles while the coating is still wet.
- Stick the finished pops into a cake pop mold. Or a cup filled with rice or sprinkles and let it dry completely. My cake pops were completely dry in 10 minutes. But if you want you can return them to the fridge until you are ready to serve!
Notes
Another option to hold the cake pops could be the bottom of a styrofoam cup.
