Mother’s Day is a special occasion celebrated worldwide to honor mothers and motherhood. For black moms, this day holds extra significance as we are constantly tasked with saving the world. Black mothers are more likely to experience maternal mortality and morbidity, as well as infant mortality, compared to other racial and ethnic groups. We have to advocate and protect our children fiercely in a society that perpetuates negative stereotypes and discrimination against our children based on their race. Moreover, we have been the backbone of our families since time immemorial.
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about how you can show your appreciation for all that your mom has done for you. Choosing the perfect gift can be challenging, especially when so many options are available. But I’ve rounded up some of the best Mother’s Day gifts for black moms that are sure to make any mother figure feel loved and appreciated on her special day.
Here are some Afro-Latina businesses that you can support while shopping for Mother’s Day gifts:
SunKiss Organics
After suffering from itchy and painful eczema for years Jessica Jade collaborated with chemists from Black and women-owned labs, creating skincare kits that not only healed her eczema but also empowered others to heal their skin. Her skincare line is designed for individuals with acne, eczema, and dark spots. The skin care kits are curated to address the unique needs of each skin type and include a range of products that work in harmony to provide creative solutions to your skincare concerns.
The Vela Negra
Owner Aisha Cort created The Vela Negra with inspiration from her Afro-Cuban and Guyanese heritage. What began as a stress-reducing outlet has evolved into a personal expression of heritage and home. A great way to create a relaxing atmosphere for any Black mom is with an individually hand-poured candle. Her candles are made using 100% vegan coconut soy wax and ethically sourced wooden wicks, fragrance, and dye.

Tres Lindas Cubanas Cigars
In 2014 the twin sisters, Yvette and Yvonne Rodriguez, first-generation Americans born to Afro-Cuban parents in Miami, launched Tres Lindas Cubanas Cigars. A cigar company that pays tribute to the Afro-Cuban woman. The cigar blends represent the beauty of Black women. Although the seeds for the tobacco come from Cuba, they grow everything in Nicaragua, where the cigars are rolled and shipped to Miami.
Pink Root Products
Launched by Mariel Mejia, Pink Root was created to help improve the transition from chemically treated and heat-damaged hair to natural hair. Ingredients are carefully chosen to nurture all textures and hair types from wavy to curly to kinks and coils. Mejia’s products are designed to restore damaged hair and promote new growth. This is a great gift idea for your natural hair journey.
I’m all about supporting Black-owned businesses so here are some more Mother’s Day gift ideas that celebrate and honor black moms:
Books by Black women authors: I have a post about books by Afro-Latina authors you can get inspiration from. However, some other favorite books by Black women authors are: Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto by Tricia Hersey, Set Boundaries, Find Peace by Nedra Glover Tawwab, and Professional Troublemaker by Luvvie Ajayi Jones.
Handmade jewelry by a black artisan: Look for unique, handmade jewelry pieces made by black artisans on platforms like Etsy. A piece of jewelry can be a thoughtful and sentimental gift for any mother, but consider personalizing it with her name, initials, or a unique design to make it extra special.

Black motherhood is multifaceted and cannot be fully captured in a single blog post. The beauty of Black motherhood lies in the strength, resilience, cultural richness, and sense of community that Black mothers embody. It is a beautiful and powerful force that deserves to be celebrated and honored. Not just on one day, but every single day, it’s important to show appreciation for our loved ones.
