Raising A Little Boy: What I’ve Learned So Far

Courtney and I started talking about kids pretty early in our relationship. We knew we wanted our first child to be a boy. We even gave him a name “Jerome.” We would talk about Jerome as if he were a real person. Some people thought we were crazy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with knowing you want to start a family with someone, and talking about it together. So you can imagine our excitement when we found out we were having a boy. High fives all around! Every ultra sound appointment we would make sure the tech didn’t mess up and his penis was still there. Today Santana is 17 months old and the time has gone by so fast. Raising this little boy of ours has been a lot of work and fun. However there were a few things that nobody prepared me for.

Boys are full of energy:

Some of you might remember Santana co-sleeps. From the time he wakes in the morning he climbs out of bed like he has a job to get to. He doesn’t just get up, he gets up and starts moving! When I take him to the play yard he runs around in circles screaming and flailing his arms in the air. I’m pretty sure the other parents think we don’t let him out, but he’s always at 100. He’s stealthy and he moves like a little ninja. Jumping off the furniture and everything!

Boys don’t stop touching themselves:

Let me tell you, this is all new for me. I have never seen someone’s hands in their pants so much! I was seriously starting to get concerned. I was thinking, is this normal? Should I️ tell him not to touch it? Should I just let him explore? I️ don’t want him to be ashamed of his body. You could tell I️ thought about this just a little too much. It took everything in me to get the nerve up to ask another mom about it without sounding like a weirdo. I was so relieved when she laughed at me and told me it was perfectly normal. I started feeling bad for thinking something was up with my son. It started pretty early and has only gotten worse as he’s gotten older. From what I can tell boys obsession’s with their own penises doesn’t go away.

Boys love their mommy!

The best thing for me so far is Santana’s love for me. I’m not going to lie. There are sometimes when Santana doesn’t want to be bothered with me at all. I just want to kiss and love on him all day and he pushes me away. It kind of hurts my feelings. But then he climbs on the couch and gets in my lap. Or he comes over to give me “un besito” without me even having to ask for it. I just warm up inside. I’m sure most of you mama’s know what I’m talking about. It Is Everything.

Raising our son has been the best thing that has happened to us. He makes us laugh, sometimes he makes us want to cry, but we wouldn’t trade it for anything. What are some things you’ve learned since having kids? Comment below. Let’s Talk About It.
